In 1930 while Horton Smith was on the professional tour Joplin and Springfield would both claim he was from their respective city. Horton suggested the two cities start a tournament, with which he would provide a trophy to see who would lay claim to being the home town of Horton Smith.

The first tournament was held in July 1930 at Joplin’s Shifferdecker golf course and Oak Hill Country Club. Each team included 12 of the city’s best golfers. The Springfield team included captain Tom Talbot, Norman Hinds, Horace Leslie, Claude Woodruff, Tommie Woodruff, Ralph Gardner, John Ferguson, Andy McDonald, Walter Cossey, C.L. Jarrett, Jack Boyd and J.H. Keet. Joplin’s team included James Porter, A.W. Knight, Jimmie O’Donnell, Brown Ransom, Carl Childress, Leonard Ott, Bob Andrew, Eddie Fowks, Arnold Levy, Fred Gulick, Wally Vancil and Dane Catching. Despite Tom Talbot tying the Shifferdecker course record of 65 Joplin would win the war on the links 11 ½ to 3 ½ . The next year the Springfield team gained redemption with a 12 ½ to 2 ½ victory. This time the tournament was held at Hickory Hills Country Club in Springfield.

In 1932 the tournament was again held in Joplin. At the end of the match the score was tied. They decided to come back the next weekend to settle the score. 36 holes were played at Hickory Hills on Saturday and 36 more on Sunday at Shifferdecker and Oak Hill Country Club in Joplin. Again a tie. Finally they decided that was enough and the cup went back to Springfield. In 1933 Springfield would win again at Hickory Hills and Glenstone golf course. In 1934 Herman Keiser would join captain John Ferguson on the Springfield team to take care of the Joplin team on their own courses. In 1935 and 1936 Springfield would again prevail.

Jumping to the modern area Joplin would top Springfield in 1998, in Joplin. In 1999 Springfield won the cup back on their own turf. The 2000 cup was won by Springfield by taking 11 of the 16 points. In the 2001 tournament Springfield would win again, getting 13 of 16 points. The 2002 through 2007 cups were won by Springfield as well. Springfield won the 2008 Cup in Joplin with a total of 12 1/2 - 11 1/2. Through 2008 Springfield leads the competition 51-22-5.
