Gene Sallee snuck onto the golf scene in the Ozarks while the focus was on the battles between John Ferguson and Herman Keiser in the mid 1930s. Sallee made his first Horton Smith Cup team in 1935. That same, year he placed second in the 1935 Glenstone Invitational tournament in Springfield. He finally won that tournament in a battle with John Ferguson in 1937. The victory would be followed by another win in the 1937 Springfield City Amateur.
In 1953, Gene won the Tri-State Amateur in Joplin by shooting a two day total score of 134, which equaled eight under par. Sallee shot an unbelievable 30 on the first nine holes and never looked back. He would win again a year later in the 1954 Springfield City Amateur. Sallee became the first head professional at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, and would hold that position for several years.
