Tom Talbot won the Springfield Junior Championship in 1925 and never looked back. Tom was a member of Drury College’s first golf team in 1928, along with being a star on the school’s football team. In 1929, Tom won the Springfield City Championship and again in 1930. During the 1930 Horton Smith Cup matches at Joplin’s Schifferdecker Golf Course, he shot a record round of 65 tying Ed Dudley, Eddie Held, and Ted Longsworth. During the same year, Tom spent the Fall with the Chicago Bears until knee injuries ended his football career.
Talbot served as head pro at Glenstone Municipal Golf Course in Springfield for three years, followed by a short stint at the Springfield Country Club. In October of 1934, Talbot moved to Hickory Hills Country Club, and finally, spent 16 years as the head professional at Grandview Golf Course in Springfield. Mr. Talbot started a city wide junior golf clinic while also heading up the first boys Horton Smith Cup team. In 1949 he won the Midwest P.G.A. Championship that was held in Kansas City. Even after Talbot retired he would teach golfers the finer points of the game at Fremont Hills and other courses around the Ozarks. Mr. Talbot died in 1992. In 1999, Talbot was inducted into the Springfield Hall of Fame.
