Bruce Hollowell
Vintage Bruce at St. Andrews
Bruce Hollowell is among the all-time greats of Ozarks amateur golf. Bruce was part of the team at Southwest Missouri State University to win the regional team title in 1962, 1963 and 1964. In his final year, he was the medalist at the MIAA meet. In 1969, Bruce won the Ozark Amateur held at Joplin’s Schifferdecker golf course and in 1972 he won the Kansas Amateur at Crestview Country Club. 1975 was the year that Bruce would win his biggest tournament, the Missouri Amateur, at Indian Hills, over Jim Rollins five and four. Hollowell would win the Missouri State Senior Championship in 1998. Bruce furthered his influence on golf in the area when he started his coaching career by heading the Southwest Missouri State University golf team in 1985. He would lead the team to back-to-back conference championships in 1987 and 1988. He coached the Southwest Missouri State University team for 12 years. Hollowell was inducted into the Southwest Missouri State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985, and the Ozarks Golf Hall of Fame in 2004.
